Nursing-themed cake

It was my friend Daphne's birthday yesterday, and she commissioned me to make a nursing-themed cake for her. This has gathered quite a lot of fans of Facebook. I am so proud!

Happy birthday, Nurse Daphne!

Pills and band aids all around the cake

Pills!

I made a sphygmomanometer!
My favorite part of this cake are the pills and band aid. They look real to me! And of course, the sphygmomanometer!

I'm taking a break this weekend, then I am off to another fondant frenzy for the rest of the month of October! I've got quite a lot of orders. Thank God for all these blessings!

Until my next post.

Pooh cake toppers and badminton-themed cake

I've been on a fondant frenzy since that Lakers birthday cake. Yesterday, I had to complete two pieces of 2D Pooh cake toppers, one piece of 3D Pooh, and a badminton-themed cake. Here they are:

Lakers-themed cake

I should make a new album in my Facebook account and name it "NBA cakes." This is the fourth I've made this year: the first one was my Celtics birthday cake, a Miami Heat cake and a Chicago Bulls cake for my dad and sister's joint birthday celebration, and this time a Lakers-themed cake for my friend's dad.

Without further ado, here's my Lakers cake:
For a 61-year-old Kobe Bryant fan

From Belle, Niq, Lady, Bem, and Bing for their Dad

Inside the box

There are a few things that I would like to note:
  • The ball is very shiny despite the fact that I used Satin Ice gumpaste for that. It's been raining all week, thus making it challenging for gumpaste to set.
  • My homemade fondant plus tylose paste was a whole lot better than ready-made gumpaste. It didn't turn to liquid upon touch. Note to self, use up that 5lb gallon of Satin Ice in the kitchen and never buy another gallon again!
Watch out for my upcoming cake projects!

Winnie the Pooh and Friends

A friend asked me to make Winnie the Pooh and friends cupcake toppers today. These toppers are made out of fondant, but I'd like to try using gum paste pretty soon.

I did this page with my Samsung Galaxy Note
Aren't they adorable?

2d Tigger and Pooh faces

The whole crew
I attempted to make a video describing my stuff, but I am having difficulty with the file format. It's a lame video, but it's a way of practicing for when I am ready to upload a tutorial.

On another note, I got myself a Samsung Galaxy Note. So what iPhone lovers? The Galaxy Note works for me, especially with it's stylus and note-taking features where I can doodle (yeah I love to doodle) cake ideas, jot down reminders, write down diary entries like the first picture, store recipes, create magazine-styled pages, and create postcards. Yeah! Loving it!

More on my running-themed vanilla rainbow cake and Hello Kitty cupcakes

I just grabbed some photos from the recipient of my running-themed rainbow cake from the previous post. I wasn't able to get a top view picture of the cake and an inside view. Well, here they are (photos courtesy of Stephanie).

Now let's move on. Here are some Hello Kitty cupcakes that I delivered to a client this morning.

It's a very BIG IMPROVEMENT from the Hello Kitty cupcakes almost a year ago.

I have better tools now and better technique, but for a self-taught baker/cake decorator, that first Hello Kitty cake and cupcakes aren't so bad. I've only been baking for about 5 months when I made this. Indeed, your skill improves with practice.

Strawberry-themed cupcakes, running-themed cake, and sugar cookies!

As usual, I have bee quite busy with all the things that I have to juggle (online job, baking, and cleaning up after my mess). As usual, this is another catch-up post.

Let's begin with my sugar cookie project last Friday. It's just a simple one.

For Saturday, I had to make 40 pieces with five different designs of strawberry-themed cupcakes.

First batch of toppers that I made

For Sunday, I had two projects. The first was a running-themed cake from a boyfriend for his girlfriend who'll be leaving the country.
Here's what's inside the cake

This is a 6-inch round 4-inch thick rainbow vanilla cake
This cake says: "I will miss you my running buddy."

Details: pink sneakers on the highway with grass and flower details and the sweethearts' logo

Featuring my special packaging for cakes that are meant as gifts

My next project for yesterday are Dora and Boots sugar cookies. These really gave me a lot of trouble. They were hard to draw, but I guess I pulled through. My friend (and her kids) were pretty pleased.

Asian Dora according to my sister

Boots!

Looking forward to next week!

I wanna keep on baking!

Baking and cake/cookie decorating are actually labor-intensive activities. Contrary to what most people think, cake decorators don't have magic wands to whip up whatever design their clients want. After a day of making my sweet treats, I really feel very exhausted, with aching back and hands.

However, on days when I don't have any scheduled orders, I can't stop thinking about baking. On my days off (so that I could regain strength to roll that fondant and to let my creative juices flow back), I browse the internet to research for design ideas and tips. I spend my waking hours thinking about my next project. Sometimes, even when I am too tired, I want to bake even if there's really no occasion. However, on days like this, I would prioritize my rest, so I'd really just imagine creating sweet treats.

I can't seem to stop. I am officially addicted. I need this addiction though. I need to keep on going so that I'll get better with my craft.

Mickey Mouse and basset hounds

My cake projects for today were really interesting. I had a cake where I made a Mickey Mouse fondant figurine. Luckily I found a tutorial on Facebook (click here to be directed to the tutorial by Torte in Pasta di Zucchero Sugar Factory). Here's what my Mickey figure looked like after three trials.

Here's how it looked on the cake:

The cake came with 16 cupcakes featuring Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Pluto. Unfortunately, I was in too much of a rush that I forgot to take photos of the cupcakes. If the kid's mother has a nice picture, I'll post it here later.

The other cake I worked on was a 9th anniversary cake featuring male and female basset hounds.

"Happy 9th Pupy Wupy"

I'm so proud of myself! I hope to get better and better.

Blast from the not-so-distant past: kinky cupcakes for my best friend's bridal shower

One of my high school best friends got married July last year, just when I was starting out with baking. She asked me to make kinky treats for her, and I happily obliged. Here's her photo (she's really enjoying it) courtesy of her sister's FB account:

Blast from the not-so-distant past: Cars cake

I was browsing through my FB photos when I saw one of the first fondant cakes the I made. This one's a Cars cake, which luckily looked like a Cars cake (despite some lacking details) even if I was just starting out. The birthday boy (the son of one of my closest colleagues from way back when I worked in TeleTech) reportedly snatched the Lightning McQueen figure immediately upon seeing it.

Here's a pic from his mom's FB account:

As you can see, the finish was still a bit soggy. It was a rainy day after all, but I could say that after almost a year, I have a better (but not yet perfect) fondant recipe.

Casino chips and sports-themed goodies

Here are two of the projects that I recently finished.

The first one is casino chip cookies and red velvet cupcakes.

The second project is running and biking themed cupcakes. So I made sneakers toppers and bicycle toppers.

Until next time!
